Big Blue Brew 5/13: Moving to the Quarterfinals

The men's tennis team moves on to the NCAA Quarterfinals after beating Harvard 4-2.

🔼 Moving On. The men’s tennis team beat the No. 12 seed Harvard Crimson 4-2 in the NCAA Super Regional. This is the third consecutive year and seventh time in program history the Cats are headed to the NCAA Quarterfinals in program history. The men took wins in all three courts to earn the doubles point. Next, they won on three courts in singles play.

🔼 Series Win. The baseball team won its series over Florida 2-1. The Cats went into 10 innings in game one and came out victorious 12-11. They dropped game two 1-10 but came back to win 7-5 in game three. On Friday, Nick Lopez lined a three-run double into the corner with two out in the 10th to get ahead. Ryan Hagenow completed a double play to prevent the Gators from tying the game again. The Cats went to 10 innings in game three, and Ben Cleaver was stellar on the mound. He blew three fastballs by a Gator with tying runs in scoring position to give the Wildcats the victory.

🔼 Championships Results. The track and field team finished competing at the SEC Outdoor Championships, winning many medals. On day two, the Cats earned three medals. Payton Phillips earned silver in the women’s pole vault, Charity Hufnagel earned silver in the women’s heptathlon, and Jackson Watts earned bronze in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase. On day three, Keaton Daniel and Luke Brown earned two gold medals. Daniel won in the pole vault, and Brown won the triple jump. The men and the women both finished in 11th place.

🔼 Postseason Honors. The Southeastern Conference named Alex Goff and Tanner Parks to postseason honors. Goff was named to the Second Team All-SEC, and Parks was recognized on the Community Service Team. This is Goff’s second time being named to the second team. He posted a career-best scoring average of 70.21 in 10 events this season. Parks totaled more than 160 hours of service time dating back to June. He has helped the FCA Leadership Camp, mentoring and tutoring students at Booker T. Washington Elementary School, interacting with youth at the Kentucky Children’s Hospital, and more.

🔵 ONE BIG THING

Conference Honors. The Southeastern Conference named Erin Coffel and Rylea Smith to the 2024 All-SEC team. Coffel was named to the First Team for her third straight season. She hit .304 in league games with three home runs, 10 RBIs, 24 walks and nine hit-by pitches. Smith was named to the Second Team and batted .313 with 26 hits, six doubles, a triple and eight RBIs.
